Riding forward – Horse in front of your leg

Many problem occur in dressage when your horse in not in front of your aids or also referred to in front of your leg. This means that with a light aid your horse should move freely forward or sideways. Most horses give you a delayed response – you put your leg on and they do not move. I like to think that the horse should react to my leg like my car reacts to the accelerator. When I put my foot on the gas pedal of my car I know how it will react. With my horses I must know that when I put my legs on how my horse will react. We start with a light aid (the type of aid you would like to give) if the horse doesn’t react then they get a stronger aid. We want to give the stronger aid till the horse moves freely forward. Every horse must know they can be ridden forward – (example riding extended canter or riding in the field where the horse can be a little less restricted.) eg on and they do not move. Judy Werner, President of ASHA, stated, When Equestrian Life presented its Learn to Ride and Drive in Style program at the ASHA Convention in February, it was immediately apparent to the ASHA Board of Directors that our organization needed to be a part of this project. Marketing to people who love horses but are not acquainted with the American Saddlebred makes this a unique opportunity for our breed. Being able to partner with UPHA and the Hackney Horse Society is also a step in the right direction to show a working relationship between three individual groups who share one goal: to shine the spotlight on two breeds who have a lot in common.
