Beginner Horseback Riding Lesson: Using Poles to Help a Rider Learn How to Post

January 21st, 2010

This is Hannah’s first lesson on Marley. She has had about 5 riding lessons in total. Hannah is 6 years old and riding very well for her age and level of experience. We are working on bringing her lower leg under her so she doesn’t have so much of a “chair seat.” Chair seat means that the rider has her legs out in front of her and is using the stirrups to push herself back in her saddle, up against the cantle. Riders usually assume a chair seat position because they don’t want to commit to being up over the horse’s motion – they are afraid of falling forward over the neck. For posting the trot, the riders legs should be in alignment with her hips, so that if the horse were to disappear out from underneath her, she would land on her feet. The posture is a lot like the athletic stance once assumes for tennis.

Marley is a 5 year old, 14h Welsh Cob. He is offered for sale. www.PonyPros.net

Using Snaking/Weaving to Slow Horse Down Without a Fight

December 13th, 2009

Here is footage from an hour long lesson with Pony Pros.

This is an exercise Linda Parelli calls “the snake” and John Lyons uses in his dvd “Controlling Your Horse’s Speed.” The rider is 11 years old and has ridden about 35 times. The pony is a 15 year old Welsh/TB cross. It is their first day in the big outdoor arena with spooky jumps :) The rider does a great job figuring out how to keep her balance while making sharp turns. This helps a rider find their balance fast and is a fun exercise for long, quick horses.

Trail Riding in the Mountains a longer vid

December 5th, 2009

On my awesome horse an adopted BLM Mustang…. adopt a wild horse if you can and tell your representatives that you do not support bills that allow the killing or slaughter of wild horses, or population control methods other than adoption!

In this one, we ride for a few minutes until we come to a real nice spot. I try to capture the surroundings as much as possible. Was holding the camera in this series of vids.
