Learn from the experience of World Champion Horse Trainer Rusty Green as explains the term “shape” and how a horse’s hip is his “drive train” and how it determines his training for that particular horse.

transcript:
Rusty: So right now these two year olds we are getting ready to show, I want to see what I’ve got, so I want to see if they are going to shape up. We’re going to lope around.
Shane: What do you mean by shape up? Tell me what you are talking about by shape up.
Rusty: Well what I mean is I want to see their eye and their hip to stay at the same spot.
Cleve: Rusty, when you are medium trotting there do you ever kinda scissor your legs and go hip, shoulders, hip, shoulders, hip, shoulders.
Rusty: A lot of it.
Do you just go shoulders for a while or hips for a while? How do you start that when you are talking about shape up?
Rusty: I start it at the trot. Probably a medium trot. And we’ll get to go and we’ll push.
And to back up what I mean by shape up, is I want to be able to put that horse’s body, whether its his front end or his rear end, where ever I want it when I’m loping around. And I want it to stay there.
And I’m gonna use a turn to emphasize that.
Cleve: You want that horse to get really soft right behind the girth area there.
Rusty: Right behind the girth area.
Shane: That’s the ticklish spot on a horse.
Cleve: You want that horse to get soft. You’re going to say kind of the right leg there controls the front end. And your left leg there controls the back end.
Rusty: My left leg controls my drive train but the biggest thing I want to see and that is probably a lot better way to put it …is I want to see right now on this horse is I’ve got a drive train. Because if I don’t have a drive train right now at this point, then I want to know.
That doesn’t meant I’m going to quit on this horse. But it’s going to let me know what the next 3 or 4 months is going to consist of.
Cleve: It helps you build your program around that horse.
Rusty: I’m going to build my program around this horse. I’m not saying, this horse may not be my futurity horse or pleasure horse this year. But he’s going to have a future we are not going to get rid of him. I’m going to let that drive train which to me which to me I start right here (puts hand on horse’s hip) determine what this horse’s future is going to be for the next 3 to 4 months.
Cleve: Right.
