What do you think about Parelli Natural Horsemanship?

July 20th, 2010

I’m thinking of using Parelli with my horses, what do you guys think about it?

With any training method it is best to pick the best of each "professional" and make your own choices with the best of the best.
I personally love Parelli however, I don’t think its a good idea to promote riding with a group or alone with only a halter, no matter how broke/safe/bomb-proof your horse is.
I also love a lot of other ideas for training horses so I have melded them together and think the methods I use are perfect for what I’m training toward.
Do lots of research and read/view lots of methods. Even visit clinics with or without your horse to see what you like or don’t like (feel comfortable with) about the ideas they use.

EDIT:
Re: promoting riding with only a halter.
I didn’t say it isn’t something I personally use or something I don’t recommend to others, just not right away and NEVER on a trail with or without others. Safety first — always — no matter how well the horse does in this headset. I have seen many very well trained horses almost kill their rider due to another horse/rider’s blow-up. I have ridden many animals with nothing and had complete control. I would NEVER recommend this to my clients until all the safety avenues and precautions are addressed.
I’ve heard Pat Parelli & his diciples many times suggest that this is the "best and only way" to ride with the most respect from your horse. I 100% disagree!

Remember you never stop learning and neither does your horse.
No one gets away with not using safety minded actions forever!

If you were to closely examine Parellis methods you would find that he has just but a bunch of catchy names and phrases to techniques that all other trainers use and is making a bunch of money from it.

All good trainers use a suggest, ask, demand type of training they just change th words to make it sound special. In short start light and increase pressure until you get the desired response. Good trainers also will tell you that good timing and feel are essential to creating a trusting and responsive partner out of your horse. Parelli stresses all of this so yes he is a good trainer, but he is not as unique as people think he is and he is very expensive. On a side note, I do not use his system, but I did go to one of his clinics once and it was a hell of a show. He is a good trainer and an excellent entertainer that is why he is so popular, no because he is better.

Cindy T: FYI I and many other trainers start (do the first 10-15 rides) all of my colts in halters and ride them in halters off and on through out the rest of their careers. They work great when your not schooling just exercising.

AmandaL: While those methods in the video are not most trainers go to methods, they are sometimes needed and used more often than people realize. It seems pretty cowboy and if not done correctly it is dangerous for both the the horse and the trainer, but there are a lot of horses out there that are deemed untrainable by trainer after trainer until the owner gives up and has the horse put down, or takes it to a trainer that knows how to used those methods. While we would all like to be soft and gentle all the time we must remember that horses are large animals and can be extremely dangerous. If I have to choose between my or my kids safety or my horses relative calmness for a few days guess what I would choose.

I think it is really cool, and a great, and natural way to teach the horse to give to any pressure, and just any other training. Good Luck.

It’s a load of crap. He uses fear with the horse, and doesn’t even make sense. It’s confusing for the horse, and painful. I am all for Natural Horsemanship. Talking with the horse in it’s own language, understand, etc. But Parelli is just an idiot.

WASTE OF TIME!!!!! It isn’t cruel or abusive or anything, but it doesn’t accomplish ANYTHING in the way of training or earning respect. My trainer is into it so I tried it and the horses are pushy and its completely ineffective. If you want to just BS then knock yourself out, but if you want to seriously train, find something else.

edit-it isn’t cruel or abusive if you do it right. Just pointless, no matter how you do it.

I have studied PNH for many yrs and have gone to several clinics and spent two weeks in Ocala for a L&HB Course. I also study other natural horsemanship trainers. I like things in all of them and dislike things in all of them.

A lot depends on your level of horsemanship and how experienced you are around horses. I would recommend searching the internet on trainers. Get a feel for what you like and what you think would work best for you and your horse.

I would recommend Parelli but also would recommend about a half dozen other trainers also. What do you want to do with your horses? What do you do with your horses?

    NO NO NO NO NO!!

Honestly i was going to get into parelli when i first got a horse but you do not want to do that.
Parelli uses force pain and fear to get the horse to do what you want.
I know heaps of people that do parelli and there horses are scittery and head-shy because of parelli methods.

If you are looking for the best for your horses do not do parelli!!!

Here is a video of LINDA PARELLI trying to make a 1/2 blind horse back-up. You’ll have to go into my question because i can’t find it on Youtube!!

I can see the point of some natural horsemanship, but i’m not a fan of Parelli, trust and respect can be built over time.
