It is called therapeutic riding. It is when anyone with a type of disability or life threatening illness learns to ride horses. It can be very beneficial especially for someone with a physical disability. When they ride the horse it provides movement that only a horse can provide that is like walking. I have seen many people that were once confined to wheelchairs be able to walk on there own unassisted. It is a great form of therapy all around. A good link would be NARHA or google therapeutic riding centers.

Therapeutic riding. They’re not all older horses, and both people with mental and physical disabilities learn to ride.
I’ve been volunteering at an RDA (riding for the disabled) for 5 and a half years. Our horses range in ages from 10 to early 20’s. We get riders with both physical and mental disabilities and they come and ride for physical therapy and education. When they don’t ride, they learn how to groom, tack up, clean tack, and feed horses, or even learning the parts of the horse. The riders learn how to work together, how to care for horses, and how to ride, which benefits their education and other activities they do.
There is also hippotherapy, used for people with physical (mainly one’s who cannot walk) disabilities. They don’t learn to ride, they just sit on the horse, and the horse’s movement goes through to the rider and can make a huge difference in movement for the rider, making walking more and more possible. However, hippotherapy is only concerned with the rider getting the physical therapy through the horse’s movement. The rider will not learn to ride, nor will they give aids to the horse, they just sit and get led around.
