I longe like this ...
I longe like this either when I am not able to fully devote my time to riding or am short of time. I agree that it is not the thing to do with all horses, but my TB is wonderfulll on the lounge, so I have no worry of him doing something he shouldn't do. The lady conducting this video DID mention that you should ALWAYS consult a trained person before trying this on your own. Faulty instruction or failure to obtain instruction in this area can be detrimental to both you and your horse.

This should ...
This should properly be named 'how NOT to lunge'. 1) never let your line touch the floor, it should be straight, from hand to nose 2) Why is your hand under your chin? it should be mostly level with your waist 3)The loops of the line should be in the OTHER hand (with the whip) so you can reel in and out easily 3) Never lunge in a head stall ! What were you thinking of woman? This video is seriously out of order.

"...You need to ...
"...You need to learn from someone who is a professional at lungeing and learn how to properly school your horse on a lunge line so that when you exercise them by lungeing, you don't have an accident of some kind." --direct quote from the video. A "professional" would usually use a safe method, if not even a cavesson. Savvy?

Adding to that: ...
Adding to that: Just as an example I have western friends that lunge with a chain lunge line- with the chain placed under the horses chin. Many people will raise their fists at this, as I assume you would as well, but it is common practice and also "get's the job done". Honestly, I would love to learn how to lunge in a cavesson, but for now I'm sticking with either a bridle or halter. Better to be safe and know what you're doing than try something completely new and mess your horse up for good.

I agree that you ...
I agree that you SHOULD use a cavesson...BUT...it is better to use a halter when you are not trained to use a cavesson or side reins, as is the same for a horse not experienced with a bridle. I, for one, am not experienced at all with a caveson..therefore..it is safer (in a way) for me to use a halter or bridle (with the lunge line through one side of the bit, over the head, and snapped to the other side of the bit)....
