Learn tips on how to lunge horses in this free equestrian-care video.

Most of us lunge …
Most of us lunge horses when we are starting them. It is easier to get on a colt that has had some ground work, personally I like to teach a horse to stop, walk, trot, and lope on command before I get on them. It makes the first ride much easier and less of a rodeo. I also lunge young horses that I am riding before I get on them to settle them and get them paying attention, before I get on them. There are many reasons to lunge horses. Ground work is an important part of training.

her lunge line was too low to the ground

you use vocal …
you use vocal commands aswell as giving a slight tug on the lunge line, so say ur wanting you horse to move forward you are more high pitched in voice like TTTTRot! were as to get them to slow down you lower your voice

Vocal commands, …
Vocal commands, usually. You probably need to consult someone who really knows how to lunge and ask them to demonstrate/teach you how to lunge.

….Isn’t that the …
….Isn’t that the point of lungeing??
February 6th, 2010 at 1:39 pm
“…You need to …
“…You need to learn from someone who is a professional at lungeing and learn how to properly school your horse on a lunge line so that when you exercise them by lungeing, you don’t have an accident of some kind.” –direct quote from the video. A “professional” would usually use a safe method, if not even a cavesson. Savvy?

Adding to that: …
Adding to that: Just as an example I have western friends that lunge with a chain lunge line- with the chain placed under the horses chin. Many people will raise their fists at this, as I assume you would as well, but it is common practice and also “get’s the job done”. Honestly, I would love to learn how to lunge in a cavesson, but for now I’m sticking with either a bridle or halter. Better to be safe and know what you’re doing than try something completely new and mess your horse up for good.

I agree that you …
I agree that you SHOULD use a cavesson…BUT…it is better to use a halter when you are not trained to use a cavesson or side reins, as is the same for a horse not experienced with a bridle. I, for one, am not experienced at all with a caveson..therefore..it is safer (in a way) for me to use a halter or bridle (with the lunge line through one side of the bit, over the head, and snapped to the other side of the bit)….

I think you missed …
I think you missed my point, lungeing is great for exercise and schooling but this demonstration is very bad and is showing how to lunge incorrectly.

OK I should’ve been …
OK I should’ve been more precise; we don’t use a bridle either we use a cavesson . It’s a specially made head piece that doesn’t slip or move around in any way and it has rings on the top of the nose not under the chin. If the rope is tied under the chin, it pulls the horses head round at the wrong angle and unbalances him, whereas if it’s on the nose it helps the horse to keep his head and neck in a harmonious line. A bridle is added later, but only for side reins never for the lunge line.

i mostly agree. …
i mostly agree. except when the halter part. horses that are beginning training are longed in a halter, as they are not experienced with a bridle. you should never introduce the bridle and longe together.
also, the excess line and whip may be held in the same hand. that is mostly preference. it can be help in multiple ways.

I longe like this …
I longe like this either when I am not able to fully devote my time to riding or am short of time. I agree that it is not the thing to do with all horses, but my TB is wonderfulll on the lounge, so I have no worry of him doing something he shouldn’t do. The lady conducting this video DID mention that you should ALWAYS consult a trained person before trying this on your own. Faulty instruction or failure to obtain instruction in this area can be detrimental to both you and your horse.

This should …
This should properly be named ‘how NOT to lunge’. 1) never let your line touch the floor, it should be straight, from hand to nose 2) Why is your hand under your chin? it should be mostly level with your waist 3)The loops of the line should be in the OTHER hand (with the whip) so you can reel in and out easily 3) Never lunge in a head stall ! What were you thinking of woman? This video is seriously out of order.
