Jumping 3′9 with my dressage horse! Read Description

March 11th, 2010

I am shocked by the amount of people who have posted comments such as: “Wow! That’s amazing! I did not think a dressage horse could jump. But thats great that you do both, dressage can get soo boring.”

First of all, WHAT DO YOU THINK EVENTING IS? Number two, all Grand Prix jumpers have their horses trained to at LEAST 3rd lvl dressage. Interesting hmm? So of COURSE dressage horses can jump. They have all the basics of slowing down, speeding forward, lengthening stride, shortening stride, balance, and bending. All that’s needed is for the horse to learn to go over a jump. Not hard.

If you ride correct dressage, it becomes anything but boring! And take this from the wild child, anti-dressage, jumping Nazi I was back a couple of years ago. Dressage, I believe, is the hardest equine sport, and while I may get flamed for saying that, it is the truth. It is the foundation for ALL equine sports, (yesh even barrel racing) and without it you CANNOT go far in any other sport. Why is it so hard? Because of the impossible goal you search for, perfection.

as my instructor said once without learning dressage you would be at the rest because it is all about balance and perfection and posture.

    I agree with the …
I agree with the person below me. Most of the grand prix jumpers are trained to atleast 3rd level. I’ve ridden a 4th level dressage horse, and he can jump like..4ft.

    Lots of dressage …
Lots of dressage horses also jump. It just stems from them being athletic horses. Most Grand Prix show jumpers are trained to a high level of dressage. I agree with you in that dressage is the hardest discipline to ride. It’s much harder than jumping fences, even at a height.

    @mollieeTR I …
@mollieeTR I apologize for forgetting event riders and obviously there will be exceptions to the stereotype I was thinking of. I was referring more to lower level showjumpers of my age group (15-17) and pony clubbers who get classed as ‘better riders’ because they can steer their horses round a higher sj course, and it angers me how half of them woulndt have a clue if it came down to schooling because it’s already been done for them.

    I’ve been learning …
I’ve been learning how to ride with dressage basics ever since I started. Even at a jumping barn I always looked at things from the dressage point of view. I also firmly believe that dressage is the best basics you can have. The training gives the horse so much balance and strength that can be used in any sport. I’m horrible at jumping though XD

I agree with ur description ! people are always like ” u take your dressage horse on hunter paces ? ”

Well of course I do because all horses need a change . Dressage is takes alot of focus for a horse and jumping is a fun break for most dressage horses

it really hacks me off that people think the dressage horses and ponies can’t jump! my welsh pony dose well at dressage but can jump really well. dressage ponies and horses are just as capable at jumping as jumping and normal ponies and horses! your horse has really got a big jump!

Umm no, this was certainly not my first time jumping him. If it was, the jumps would be poles and cross rails. xDD

I’ve known that he can jump like this for awhile. He used to event, and I went through this crazy stage a few years ago where I jumped anything and everything, galloping naturally. lol

Don’t stress. Yes it’s older, but I still keep checking comments and remain active.

Agreed! Glad that we have yet another YouTuber who understands how much fun and beneficial dressage is.

I know this is an …
I know this is an old video and I’m getting to it late, but I totally agree with you. My horse was a dressage horse before I got him and he jumps now just fine. Matter of fact we were going toward a jump and he went into dressage mode and I couldn’t get him out of it! He’s so great at both though, and dressage is not boring! it’s such a challenge and so important when you’re training! :P

  21. soundsofsilencex3 Says:

    a lot dressage …
a lot dressage horses turn out to be equitation horses, i don’t know why people think dressage horses can’t jump. xD every four legged animal is capable of jumping. beautiful job by the way :]

  22. mollieeTR Says:

    And i personally …
And i personally dont find dressage that exciting compared to jumping, it doesnt mean i dont understand it, it just means i have different interests to those who do. We’re all different in what is fun for us.

kudos if anyone read all that lol

and ‘piaffequeen’, by the way, beauiful horse! :)

    I believe every …
I believe every discpline within horse riding, or within any sport for that matter, has a never ending depth of skills to be learnt, depending on your committment to it.

And therefore, no discipline should be belittled, or put down as just “sitting on a horse and steering it round some jumps”

(”YowArePoof1″, i dont mean to be attacking you personally by quoting you, but it just helps show the point im trying to get across :)

    ..theres just a bit moree… :P

  24. mollieeTR Says:

I just want to add …
I just want to add my opinion to this, cause it seems like a healthy discussion rather than just which usually happens on here! :)

I am an eventer, and I would not give up the thrill i get from xc for anything, but I completely agree that dressage is the basis to all training, and a big part of eventing.

HOWEVER.. just in response to a few comments which are basically saying that jumping is easy and doesnt take ‘brain’, you must not know about eventing!

    continued….

  25. 02Early Says:

    it was far more …
it was far more cruel when the made him go round and round and round in circles, he was going crazy, and far more cruel still when he was going round and round the race track and busted his tendons! now he comes running when he’s called and wants to be ridden!
