February 7th, 2010
i’m 14 now but the problem is i don’t have time to horse ride at the moment, i was going to go a while back but now our GCSE’s are starting earlie and i have cadets and babysit.
so i told myself i would wait a few years before going.
i’d start when i move back to Scotland again. but the problem is, ill be 18+ when i go there.
i mean i’ve always wanted to learn to ride and went for a lesson once and fell off. but is 18 and older to old to start horse riding?
No, you will not be too old. Find a good riding instructor that can teach you the proper way to ride. Also look for someone who can give you confidence, and is patient, and haas the proper tools for teaching a beginner. I know many people who have had lessons in their forties and did just fine. Decide what kind of riding you want to do such as pleasure riding, Western Riding, or English. My guess is that you would just like Pleasure riding. Good choice if that is indeed the route you want to take. But you should not have any problems with age standing in your way. Good luck and have fun.

You are never to old if your health is good. I rode when I was a teenager and now I’m over 40 and learning to ride again. A bit of wisdom for women: You can do it all, just not all at once.
There is a time for everything if you want to do it.

The great thing about riding is that you can start at nearly any age. My mom was 40 when she first started and it made no difference whatsoever. In fact I think starting at a more mature age has its advantages in some ways. You are more likely to be more receptive to the horse, and will pay closer attention to instructions and remember them.
There are always things that you can do now that will get you prepared for riding in the future such as strengthening your leg muscles, working on flexibility, reading lots of books and watching videos.
