how do do alot of natural horsemanship?

November 2nd, 2011

i neex to do as much natural horsemanship with my new mare. i am gonna start with a join up then trust excersises, and maybe the 7 pat parelli games. but what else could i do?? thanks

NOT PARELLI. If you’re going to go the natural horsemanship route.. try Clinton Anderson. You can find nearly all his training programs online, for FREE.. and he doesn’t want you to buy any uneccessary equipment that will cost you a fortune. Start off with Clinton Anderson: Lunging for Respect. All the sessions are online for free.

EDIT: as another user said, Stacy Westfall is awesome. If you buy any weaver product, they will sometimes have a tag on them where you can get a free DVD by entering a product code on a website. They’ll send you a ‘Training on the Trail’ DVD.. it also has a session on desensitizing. It covers quite a bit, and usually retails at $50. All it takes is buying a halter or another weaver product.. and you can usually get one.(: They are VERY useful.

What do you think of Parelli’s Natural Horsemanship method?

October 17th, 2011

I am in year 11 and doing the research project in school this year. My topic is What method is most effective when training horses, Andrew Mcleans ‘pressure release’ system or Parelli’s ‘natural horsemanship’ method? I want to know what you think of the Parelli method, if you use it, what you like about it and what you don’t and the cons of using this method. I would like to know the benefits it has on your horse and why you chose to use it or not. thanks alot!

My experience with horses who had "parellie training" was that they tended to be agitated and slightly neurotic, a direct result of the handling (parelli training) – this became apparent as I watched the owners interacting with the horses, playing the games or doing whatever they called it. The horses all needed retraining and to be taught both to respect and trust the people handling them.

Sample clip from Eric Bravo’s natural horsemanship Leadership Series, horse training video 1: Catching and Leading Your Horse. Eric works with a hard to catch horse to establish leadership. By becoming a leader for the horse, you can start to earn her trust which then leads into the connection you’re looking for. After reaching a point where the horse allows Eric to put the halter on, he then runs through some leading exercises to reinforce leadership, trust, and respect with the horse.

Parelli Natural Horsemanship Demonstration – Parelli Foundation Fundraiser

August 19th, 2011

On May 13th a fundraiser was held for the Parelli Foundation at The 17 Ranch in Thamesford, Ontario. The event was attended by more than 150 spectators, their $20 donation at the door and additional donations they made for their free BBQ dinner combined with the raffle prize participation raised $4300.00. The time between 6 and 7:00 pm was the pre-show. The pre-show was an opportunity for the students who were currently enrolled in the ongoing clinic to participate. In groups of three they played in front of the gathering crowd to music (three songs) online playing with what they know. The students, of the 5 day Parelli Experience camp seized the opportunity to be outside their comfort zone and participate in front of the audience. After a brief welcome and introduction, a small explanation of the Parelli Foundation, the audience was next treated to watch 4 of Canada’s Junior Instructors, Randee Halladay, Todd Owens, Maureen Owens and Jan Brooks play in three savvy’s. One of The Parelli experience participants, Laura Albin, is a long time student of Eddo Hoekstra and Mr. Walter Zettl. Laura and Don Halladay rode a very well received Dressage duet. The display of finesse in both English and Western saddles was a huge impact for the crowd. Throughout the evening our master of ceremonies John Baar inspired and entertained the audience with anecdotal stories and educational references. After the 30 minute break the Grand finale took place. Don Halladay wow’d the crowd with his liberty session (riding Smart Kokie Joe and playing with Maverick at Liberty) this was followed up with a demonstration of working cows. Some of the fast manoeuvres made by Don and his cutting horse got some of the loudest cheers of the night.

The crowd cheered the loudest when we announced we had raised $4300 for The Parelli Foundation!

This event was an incredible success for the attendees the participants the organizers and especially the horses.

On behalf of the event organizers; Don & Randee Halladay, Todd & Maureen Owens, and all the many participants and Barb & Dennis Glover ,owners of The 17 Ranch, we thank you for allowing us to contribute our time, energy and influence to making the World a better place for horses and humans!
