What do you think about Parelli Natural Horsemanship?

I’m thinking of using Parelli with my horses, what do you guys think about it?

With any training method it is best to pick the best of each "professional" and make your own choices with the best of the best.
I personally love Parelli however, I don’t think its a good idea to promote riding with a group or alone with only a halter, no matter how broke/safe/bomb-proof your horse is.
I also love a lot of other ideas for training horses so I have melded them together and think the methods I use are perfect for what I’m training toward.
Do lots of research and read/view lots of methods. Even visit clinics with or without your horse to see what you like or don’t like (feel comfortable with) about the ideas they use.

Re: promoting riding with only a halter.
I didn’t say it isn’t something I personally use or something I don’t recommend to others, just not right away and NEVER on a trail with or without others. Safety first — always — no matter how well the horse does in this headset. I have seen many very well trained horses almost kill their rider due to another horse/rider’s blow-up. I have ridden many animals with nothing and had complete control. I would NEVER recommend this to my clients until all the safety avenues and precautions are addressed.
I’ve heard Pat Parelli & his diciples many times suggest that this is the "best and only way" to ride with the most respect from your horse. I 100% disagree!

Natural horsemanship hypocracies? Opinions?

I’m just curious to what other people think about the hypocracies of natural horsemanship. I’m not trying to offend anyone but think about this. Natural horsemanship is supposed to be a gentle way of working with horses with no hitting or force. It is also supposed to be about communicating with your horse in his language. It’s about being equals with your horse. But horses aren’t gentle with each other. They bite, they kick, they push each other around. That’s their language. It’s a physical language. They don’t say "oww please don’t bite me". They bite back. And horse definitely are not equals. They live in a pecking order with dominant and submissive horses and the dominant ones push the submissive ones around to keep them in their place. That’s natural. So that makes these natural horsemanship methods hypocritical.

What do you think?

I agree with you. Granted, I have seen some success with the "natural horsemanship", but usually the horses are pushy and hard to deal with. We actually got a horse in that was trained the "natural" way – 5 year old horse didn’t know how to turn! Sure, you could walk/trot/lope, but that didn’t help when you hit the fence at a gallop!

My biggest complaint with the "natural horsemanship" trainers is they aren’t all they make out to be – I was at a clinic one time and saw one of the "trainers" (I will leave the name out for privacy reasons) grab the horses ear and twitch it because he was misbehaving – I’m sorry, doesn’t that go completely against what they preach about? Another trainer beat a horse with a 4 x 4 post because he would lead (first time the horse ever had a halter on – duh) – left a permanent scar in the colt’s eye. So, when no one is looking, are they really following what they teach? Don’t they say that those that can, do and those that can’t, teach?

I do Parelli and I love it, but I was just wondering how many people here use it, if you do practice natural horsemanship what program do you use?

I use Parelli and love it (so do the horses)!

Natural Horsemanship

I confess that I’m a tad nervous around any animal big enough to crush me just by not paying attention. Nonetheless, I found it pretty cool that my friends, Kevin and Ginny have learned how to respectfully enjoy their horses on their horses’ own terms. I don’t know if it is exactly horse whispering, but watching the way they treat their horse, Tenor, is impressive. It’s almost as if they don’t train the horse, but they merely learn each others’ languages.

Let me also thank them for their great hospitality in Florida, the way they treated my son, Sam and ask God’s blessings on their family.
