can and should i learn to ride horses?

October 17th, 2011

I love horses and i would love to learn how to ride. But i get a little bit nervous for some reason and i don’t know why? I will watch someone riding a horse and say ‘i wish i could do that’ but when i go for lessons sometimes just before and whilst im next to the horse or before im about to mount it my legs and hands start shaking and this is not on all horses for some reason im mostly only confident on grey horses (or white as when they are older and the coat kinda changes)???? it makes no sense. another thing i am 12 years old about 5 foot 4 or 5 foot 6(not really sure somewhere between 5f 4 and 5f 6) and weigh around 8 stone, a beginner in riding so what is what is the min and max height i should ride(eg 13.1hh-15.3hh)??? im thinking i shouldn’t learn to ride, but i would love to learn how to ride, and i even sometimes dream that i am at a stables cleaning my horses bridle! i used to watch a show called the saddle club which i have started watching again on youtube and i would love to own or look after and ride a horse! if you could answer my questions and add your opinions and any additional information i would really appreciate it.

thank you!

well i just got back from riding a few minutes ago and i love horses too! and i started riding when i was 11, my grandma boards horses, and she bred a horse named heston ( my now horse) and i am never nervous riding horses, because once you get up there wow! its so unexplainable the relationship between you and your horse, your best friends, and there is no min-max height for riding, because some kids start out at 3 and some really tall people ride horses too! riding is such a fun sport! and it is so fun to really advance, and you’ll have some off days with your horse, but who dosnt? i was so much like you with the dreams and breyer horses and watching saddle club, and everything! believe me, you should definately try riding horses, and once you get passed your fear, it will be so fun! and believe me its truly rewarding! i just came back from a show last weekend with 14- First Place ribbons and a grand champion trophy! it was so fun! and its really really hard work starting out with buying a horse so i wouldnt suggest it, but try starting out leasing one, or going at a stables and trying out lesson horses, andd don’t be afriad on a lesson horse, they should be really calm, and most have to pass a test, believe me its a lot of work, but at the end of the day when its just you and your horse cantering bareback( which i love to do although it took me 3 years) its the best feeling in the world! – happy riding, maddy (13 years)

Do You Want A Free Riding Lesson?
Exclusively on Equestrian Life, The Learn to Ride and Drive in Style program is an exciting way for you to get involved with saddle seat horses and ponies. Go to  www.equestrianlife.com/freelesson/ to learn about the American Saddlebred and Hackney breeds and to call for FREE lesson from a certified trainer near you!
The first step is to visit www.equestrianlife.com/freelesson, watch the commercial and 10 introductory videos on the Learn to Ride and Drive in Style program, and sign up for a complimentary lesson during August, September, or October. On the Equestrian Life.com page, there is a list of participating trainers, and you can print out a coupon for your FREE lesson!
Equestrian Life.com has partnered with the American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA), the United Professional Horsemen’s Association (UPHA), and the American Hackney Horse Society (AHHS) to bring this unique promotion to aspiring equestrians across the nation.

To find out more about Learn to Ride and Drive in Style, please visit www.equestrianlife.com/freelesson/
For more information on the associations that partnered with Equestrian Life for the Learn to Ride and Drive in Style program, please visit their websites:
From ASHA: www.asha.net
Judy Werner, President of ASHA, stated, When Equestrian Life presented its Learn to Ride and Drive in Style program at the ASHA Convention in February, it was immediately apparent to the ASHA Board of Directors that our organization needed to be a part of this project. Marketing to people who love horses but are not acquainted with the American Saddlebred makes this a unique opportunity for our breed. Being able to partner with UPHA and the Hackney Horse Society is also a step in the right direction to show a working relationship between three individual groups who share one goal: to shine the spotlight on two breeds who have a lot in common. They are both extraordinary breeds that make the ultimate show animal and also fit into so many different disciplines, along with being the perfect family horse or pony.
From AHHS:www.hackneysociety.com Randy Harper is the AHHS President and he noted, As President of the AHHS and past president of the UPHA, the main goal I have for the Equestrian Life program is to increase awareness of the Hackney breed. We also hope to increase activities involving the Hackneys and encourage pony trainers and owners to be approachable to all levels of interest and help grow the Society in a positive manner. We want to let people know that anyone can learn to drive and ride a Hackney; they are very versatile and the most athletic equines in the World. I think the Learn to Ride and Drive in Style program has all the key elements to make these goals happen.
From UPHA www.uphaonline.com
Equestrian Life’s Learn To Ride and Drive in Style Program is a rare opportunity to bring together the United Professional Horseman’s Association, American Saddlebred Horse Association and the American Hackney Horse and Pony Society for one common goal: To promote, expose and give access to our wonderful horses and ponies. This project is the first marketing project we have taken on as a team that not only showcases our product, it actually gives the horse lover a way to enter the world of American Saddlebred Horses and Hackney Horse and Ponies by giving free riding and driving lesson coupons. We know once they discover our amazing American Saddlebred Horses and Hackney Horse and Ponies, they will be hooked for life. The UPHA is proud to be a part of such an exciting endeavor said Bret C. Day, UPHA President.

Am i too old to learn about riding horses?

August 15th, 2011

im 15 and my family has never had much money and we havent really lived anywhere near horses but ive always loved them since i can remember. most of the people i know who have ridden horses have done so since they were little. i wanted to know if im too old to start learning about them or learning to ride them because when im older i would love to ride them. ten pts thanks :)

That’s almost EXACTLY my story. I’m 15 too & don’t live too close to any horses. However, only difference is that I had ridden english when I was younger for a few years until I had to quit. I then took up other sports like softball & soccer, but I was constantly thinking about horses. I waited almost 5 years til I quit softball before I got on a horse again. I started taking western lessons about this time last year & joined a high school equestrian team as a beginner. I quickly advanced, & within about 8 months, I went to National Finals & won National Champion for my division. I hadn’t even been riding western for a year yet! I now am planning on trying to do the same thing again this year with horsemanship & reining (which I started doing about a month ago).

And on top of that, I told my family I’ve always wanted to go farther with horses & after a few months of begging, researching, putting in time & effort, I finally got my very own horse at the age of 15 :) Now I have a big, gorgeous gelding named Bandit that I am working on training & couldn’t be more proud of. My dreams have come true all within the span of a year because I put my mind to something & decided I wanted it to happen. I have big goals of going to college & riding, then pursuing a career in the horse industry – either as a trainer or an equine vet.

My story goes to show you that you’re definitely never "too old" to start learning to ride. As long as you’re passionate about it & are willing to put the time & effort into practicing, the sky’s the limit. And let me tell you it’s all been worth it. I’m so proud of what I do now that it’s hard to find me not wearing my boots & spurs! :)
