Suggest any good reading materials to learn horse behavior for a beginner rider/owner?

February 25th, 2010

I’m a beginner rider from Sri Lanka and I always wanted to ride/own a horse as long as I remember. After I started to really research in to horses I understood that it’s not as simple as I thought it was.
Now I know that you really need to have a good understanding of horse behavior and its habits and instincts, also its diet, how to manage a horse and also their medical conditions and a lot of commitment and a lot of money to be a good owner and a rider. Therefore I thought I will not be quick to own a horse for a good 4-5 years even though I will learn to ride in the coming months cos I don’t want to hurt my horse or myself due to a lack of knowledge.

So I thought learning "why horses do what they do" would be a great place to start learning things. So my question is, please suggest any reading material online or books and also your personal know-how with regard to this.
There is very little horse culture in Sri Lanka and therefore very limited local knowledge on horses.
Currently I’m in Malaysia and taking my first lessons on horseback riding. I spend as much time as I can in the stable learning from the trainers as I can but it’s only my first week.

Thanks for all your answers in advance..Cheers

Try ‘Think like your horse’ by Michael Peace.

Michael is a holistic trainer who spcialises in problem horses, never blaming the horse only the rider or handler.

I had a horse who wouldn’t load for years about 10 to be precise. When I moved him yards it took us 5 hours, 3 broken head collars and 2 broken lunge lines and I am not inexperienced. He’d kick hell out of you just for going near him with a trailer.

I tried Michaels method outlined in this book and I swear to god he loaded in 13 minutes flat without one kick or fight.

It was perfect!

There are lots of good books out there but try to get ones that concentrate on ‘kind’ methods. Horses will do anything if asked correctly. Its a matter of explaining rather than forcing.

February 25th, 2010

In this scene from our DVD UNDERSTANDING HORSES shows a 29 day old mule foal that has less than 2 hours of training, starting at birth. The first part of the video shows how athletic and active the foal is…. jumping, sprinting, spinning and doing slide stops. The second half, as shown here demonstrates how much she learned during her imprinting period, right after birth. can you just buy a horse and learn to ride it yourself?

February 22nd, 2010

You might put this over in the horse section, but I happened to see it. It is NOT a good idea. Horses are big, powerful animals with a flight instinct. Even though "domesicated" they still have a strong flight response, and since domesticated, can also be spoiled. How would you know which horse to buy? I usually recommend beginning horse owners to buy a well trained, well behaved horse….how would you know if this is one, if you have never ridden before.

You might be able to buy books and videos that teach you a lot, but the risks are pretty high.

265 pound person wants to learn to ride a horse?

February 19th, 2010

I have always wanted to learn how to ride, but at my weight people make me feel like I am on a mission to kill a horse. There are 3 stables in my areas of course they all have weight limits under 200 lbs for lessons. There are also a few farms in the area that breed horses and one said that I could go hang out with the animals and learn how to saddle/tack them but not ride them, because I am too heavy, so I didn’t do that because that would be like torture in a way. I don’t have much money anymore as this economy took my job and for the last six months I haven’t been able to afford much, so even If I could do it I couldn’t afford it, I have offered places hard work in exchange for lessons, like stall cleaning and bathing but that hasn’t worked either. My wife had always had horses until 3 months before she met me, she sold it because she was in college and never used it, go figure(lol) she always said that she wants more, and I was like ok then I will learn, but the job situation took care of that. She said if we could spare the money she would let me take lessons, but we now are expecting our first baby, and since money is still kind of tight, I would rather save it for our baby, so that kills that again. I am 26 and have been wanting to learn since I was 10. I have lost a lot of weight I used to weigh like 330lbs, and I am trying to lose weight so it might be possible, but I can’t seem to lose anymore. Her best friend has a pony, but even if she said that I could ride it, I would be afraid too. I am just venting, I don’t know if anyone really cares but I live in indiana. Maybe I’m just weird, and should give up on trying, because I feel that by the time the cards work out right Ill be 50 and unable to learn. I have actually though about jumping a fence and trying to ride one, but I don’t want to go to jail for trespassing, and that’s just silly. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

Instead of learning how to ride, why not learn how to drive? You wouldn’t have to worry about your weight, and in some ways it might be easier to learn. The initial outlay (harness, cart etc) would be more expensive, but horses are high maintenance anyway.

If we had the money and the space, I think I’d prefer driving than riding – you don’t have to struggle to get on, and I don’t think any one has fallen off of a cart.

will i be to old to learn to horse ride?

February 7th, 2010

i’m 14 now but the problem is i don’t have time to horse ride at the moment, i was going to go a while back but now our GCSE’s are starting earlie and i have cadets and babysit.
so i told myself i would wait a few years before going.
i’d start when i move back to Scotland again. but the problem is, ill be 18+ when i go there.
i mean i’ve always wanted to learn to ride and went for a lesson once and fell off. but is 18 and older to old to start horse riding?

No, you will not be too old. Find a good riding instructor that can teach you the proper way to ride. Also look for someone who can give you confidence, and is patient, and haas the proper tools for teaching a beginner. I know many people who have had lessons in their forties and did just fine. Decide what kind of riding you want to do such as pleasure riding, Western Riding, or English. My guess is that you would just like Pleasure riding. Good choice if that is indeed the route you want to take. But you should not have any problems with age standing in your way. Good luck and have fun.
