How to train your horse western?

July 21st, 2011

I have a 14hh welsh pony, hes around 3 years old and has been lightly backed in an english saddle and bridle.
Iv always wanted to ride western and im just wondering if you need a special horse, for it such as a quater horse?
I live in the UK so there isnt many western people around but its something I’d love to learn and for my horse to learn too.
How could I teach him to ride western?

Any tips :)
Thanks! xx

Okay….the reason why quater horses are used for western riding is mainly because their good with cattle. Also the type of horse depends on the country you use it in thats another reason why quater horses are used in western. It doesnt have to be a certian type of horse to be rode western. I would recommend letting the horse get used to the extra weght before riding it. It can be rode western though.

Before and After with Parelli – longer version

July 20th, 2011

I am from New Zealand and my horse is a 12 year old Swedish Warmblood Palomino called Garbo. I started to learn to ride 6 years ago now and when I got Garbo in Year 2 we started off well but I quickly became disillusioned with the standard training methods taught to me by instructors. The use of force and whips made my horse kick, rear and buck which in turn made me lose my confidence completely, I also thought there must be a kinder way and one that didn’t require me to wear gloves to stop me getting blisters on my hands!.

2 years ago I found Parelli and started studying via the Home Study Program and this shows some Before’s and Afters in our Parelli Life. We are now studying Level 3.

why dont people like natural horsemanship?

July 15th, 2011

Why dont people like NATURAL HORSEMANSHIP. Not parelli or any of that, but just natural horsemanship in general. The idea of natural horsemanship. The definition.
I just see lots of people dissing natural horsemanship and shunning it. Why dont people like it? If you dont like it please tell!

I’m fine with the idea of it- Clinton Anderson is amazing, Monte, etc, are awesome, so there’s no hate towards natural horsemanship to me. It’s the idiots who think that if you use bits, spurs, a crop/whip, or anything like that, you’re abusing your horse that make me mad. The extremists are the problem, not the practice. It’s like religion in that sense.
