Is it ever too late to learn to ride/own horses?

February 27th, 2011

I have always loved animals especially horse but didnt have the opportunity growing up to be around them much . my grandma grew up on a farm so i guess i kinda have that in my blood.I have gone on trail rides( the kind where you dont really do much besides sit on the horse while if follows the others ) and even took a horsmanship class where i learned some of the basics of care and riding . Once i had the pleasure of going on a trail ride with a friend and her aunt who owns horses and absolutely fell more in love with the freedom of being able to choose where to ride and such . I plan on owning a 2-3 horses of my own someday .I have done tons of research on the costs and other things that go along with owning horses and have already begun to save up. Is it too late to learn once you are already an adult ? and also is it hard to learn to care for them on your own ?
Another thing is i don’t really know anyone who owns a horse so i don’t really know anyone who can maybe mentor me or help me out in the begging with like learning the ropes of horse ownership.
Also the horsemanship program i have done everything from mucking stalls cleaning hooves , and bathing so i think iv got a pretty good head start on the actual care part .Iv also learned to riding basic and have experienced and controlled minor bucking

My trainer had never sat on the back of a horse until he was twenty five years old.

He is now in his late forties and runs the Delaware Valley College Equestrian Center. He also competes successfully in the level 5 showjumpers and is currently in Italy doing a jumping clinic on brideless riding.

Here he is at the college jumping a 5′ fence without a bridle on his Italian Warmblood Liberty:

Long story short, it is never too late to learn. :)

Basic natural horsemanship I can start with on my horse this spring.?

February 18th, 2011

I own a six year old Thoroughbred percheron cross, and he’s still really green. I’ve owned him for two years now and he’s still a little reluctant to trust me. I heard of natural horsemanship just the other day, and it sounds amazing. Is there anything basic I can try as a start before the show season? Thanks!

You don’t want to do natural horsemanship if youplan on showing, unless youplan on showing natural horsemanship. At many show riding bareback/bridleless is illegal.

Here is a great site with examples (or just look up parelli)
http://www.connectwithyourhorse.com/index.htm

Keep in mind you will need mentors and people to help youalong. Its not easy to get into.

Good luck!

Will people make fun of me if im new to horseback riding?

February 18th, 2011

I am 13 years old and I have been riding since I was 6 but I only rode western and did trail rides, I never took a real lesson. I am starting lessons but I have met/watched a lot of the other people at the barn and they are my age but really good. Im nervous about them making fun of me for not being as good as them. Should I just ignore them?
Also, the trainer there is really nice so that helps (: Thanks everyone, I feel much more confident!

I doubt the trainer would tolerate people being mean to a new rider in the barn. Most people will be eager to help. Some may come off as a little bit know-it all if they are trying to show off how much they know but if anything gets out of hand at all talk to the instructor about it. If you rode when you were younger you will probably catch up in no time :)

ADOPT ME! Molly’s 2nd ride…EVER! Adorable Paint/Pony Cross Mare Available to Adopt

February 17th, 2011

Molly is a 4yo (2005 model) paint/pony cross mare with great looks, adorable markings including a goose shaped white splotch above her multicolored tail, and an unbelievable mind. She is, FAR above and beyond, the smartest horse we’ve ever met. Molly LOVES to learn new things, and loves attention.

We hope you enjoy this video of Molly’s 2nd ride ever. Sorry, there were some camera difficulties again, so quality is not spectacular, but hopefully it will give you an idea of the very nice progress she is making.

Molly is showing surprisingly nice balance for only a second ride, and has good forward motion. During this video you will see her try out a few ideas, such as planting her feet and simply not moving. We WANT our horses to think about things, to keep learning and to be an active part of riding, so we are happy to see Molly offer up these ideas, and then to accept our guidance to continue with what we asked.

For more details and how to adopt molly, please visit http://www.cwer.org

Nikia’s April Moon

February 17th, 2011

Nikia’s April Moon is a 2002 double-registered AMBA/ABRA mare. As a weanling, she was the Kansas Buckskin Horse Association high-point weanling mare, 1st Place Weanling Mare 2002 ABRA Pre-World Show, and finished 8th at the 2002 ABRA World Show.

Since then, April has established herself as an innately talented Western and English pleasure mare. She’s an all-around horse, and with additional training, would do very well in Youth Reining or Youth Hunter Under Saddle. April loves children, and we’ve been using her as a lessons horse for children who are just beginning to ride.

Horse Cam – Trail Riding in Virginia

February 17th, 2011

One of the greatest pleasures of summer in Virginia – trail rides with a little jumping for fun, followed by a tailgate with good food and drink. A chance to school horses in groups and over a few logs and coops and catch up with horsey friends.

Ferguson is a 15 yo TB former timber racer, and at times he still thinks he’s a 5 yo racing jumping machine.
