Is it ever too late to learn to ride/own horses?
February 27th, 2011
I have always loved animals especially horse but didnt have the opportunity growing up to be around them much . my grandma grew up on a farm so i guess i kinda have that in my blood.I have gone on trail rides( the kind where you dont really do much besides sit on the horse while if follows the others ) and even took a horsmanship class where i learned some of the basics of care and riding . Once i had the pleasure of going on a trail ride with a friend and her aunt who owns horses and absolutely fell more in love with the freedom of being able to choose where to ride and such . I plan on owning a 2-3 horses of my own someday .I have done tons of research on the costs and other things that go along with owning horses and have already begun to save up. Is it too late to learn once you are already an adult ? and also is it hard to learn to care for them on your own ?
Another thing is i don’t really know anyone who owns a horse so i don’t really know anyone who can maybe mentor me or help me out in the begging with like learning the ropes of horse ownership.
Also the horsemanship program i have done everything from mucking stalls cleaning hooves , and bathing so i think iv got a pretty good head start on the actual care part .Iv also learned to riding basic and have experienced and controlled minor bucking
My trainer had never sat on the back of a horse until he was twenty five years old.
He is now in his late forties and runs the Delaware Valley College Equestrian Center. He also competes successfully in the level 5 showjumpers and is currently in Italy doing a jumping clinic on brideless riding.
Here he is at the college jumping a 5′ fence without a bridle on his Italian Warmblood Liberty:

Long story short, it is never too late to learn.

Molly is a 4yo (2005 model) paint/pony cross mare with great looks, adorable markings including a goose shaped white splotch above her multicolored tail, and an unbelievable mind. She is, FAR above and beyond, the smartest horse we’ve ever met. Molly LOVES to learn new things, and loves attention.
Nikia’s April Moon is a 2002 double-registered AMBA/ABRA mare. As a weanling, she was the Kansas Buckskin Horse Association high-point weanling mare, 1st Place Weanling Mare 2002 ABRA Pre-World Show, and finished 8th at the 2002 ABRA World Show.

One of the greatest pleasures of summer in Virginia – trail rides with a little jumping for fun, followed by a tailgate with good food and drink. A chance to school horses in groups and over a few logs and coops and catch up with horsey friends.
