is there a job where i can learn how to ride horses in italy?

January 30th, 2011

I want to find a way to learn how to ride horses (as in going on long trails, and ride them really fast). is there a job i could have where i can learn how to do that at the same time as riding horses? i plan on traveling to Italy after school ends, and i dont care about making alot of money, i just want to make enough to be able to travel more if i decide i want to, and to have a place to stay and eat. and if there is a job like this or close to this, where would i go to do it?
thanks

There are some equestrian centers here in various places, but not a huge number. The problem is that it would be illegal for you to work here coming from the US unless you have a visa that allows you to work. EU citizens have the right to live and work freely within the EU, others cannot automatically live and work here. The site for visas here in Italy is: http://www.esteri.it/visti/index_eng.asp . The site has links to the application, the additional information you need to supply in order to get the visa and where to apply.

A work permit is separate – you cannot apply for that yourself. The company has to apply and they have to be able to demonstrate that there is not a viable EU candidate for the job. As a result, jobs for foreigners including Canadian or US citizens are pretty much restricted to people with special education, knowledge, or experience … and you would have to be able to speak the local language. The type of work you’re looking for is unlikely since there will be tons of European candidates for those positions and unemployment is high here right now.

If you were Canadian, you could look into a working holiday visa, but those are not available to US citizens.

Why do people think that it’s effeminate for my son to ride horses?

January 27th, 2011

I have lived in America for 7 years, and I am originally from Hyrule. In my country, it is normal that boys (and sometimes girls) learn to ride horses. My 8 year old son has been riding horses for a year now, and me and my husband really appreciate it. It is very important for us that our son learns to ride a horse, use a sword and do archery because it is a requirement of all males in our country.
Me and hubby have mostly Hylian friends, but also some American friends. The problem is that most of the American friends consider it child abuse that we want our son to ride horses. They say that riding horses is only for girls and that it is a very effeminate thing to do. In my culture, horseriding is not considered effeminate at all. It is actually considered the total opposite: brave, masculine and chivalrous.
It is also important that our son learns to play harp and ocarina. My American friends tell me that harp playing is considered feminine and that I should rather let him play guitar. I don’t want my son to play guitar. Guitar is not part of my country’s musical traditions. Harp and ocarina are the most common instruments.
I don’t want my son to forget his culture. We might move back to Hyrule any time, and I want my son to be able to fit in in Hyrule without problems.
I am scared that my son will quit horseriding when he is older because maybe his friends will tell him that it is effeminate. How can I be able to convince my son and other people that horseriding is not effeminate?

Learning to tame and ride a horse is a great skill to acquire! I once knew a great warrior who had the most wonderful flaxen horse. I believe her name was Epona. If you go back to Hyrule, you really should check out Lon Lon ranch. I’m pretty sure that’s where he got her.
It’s also essential that your child learns the harp or ocarina. Not only can a melody tame a horse, but it can summon them no matter how far away. I once saw him summon Epona to Kakariko village from Romani ranch! I hear it’s hard to find Horse grass around these parts though…

How can I learn a knight’s skills? Sword fighting, falconry, letherwork, riding, etc?

January 27th, 2011

I’ve always been fascinated with medieval history, and have wished on many an occasion that there was a school or camp that schooled you in the ways of knighthood or simulated the experience. I know it would be hard work but the idea enthralls me. I would love to learn to sword fight, NOT FENCE with a little rapier, but swordfight with a broadsword, and learn to ride horses and strategise and camp/live off the land and work with leather and falcons/hawks. Does anyone of a program, school, or camp remotlely like this? It would be a dream come true!
I can’t go to the Society for Creative Anachronism, the group in my area contains only adults and mandates that I must bring a parent. Neither of my parents is remotly interested.
I respect the merits of fencing, but it is just not my passion.

Fencing teaches you to protect your body and if you want to be a true servant of the sword, then I would suggest taking a beginners course in it. The first thing they teach you is "speed of hand and speed of mind always wins in a sword fight".

I love swordplay and have about ten different swords. I’ve also taken a few fencing classes and was surprised at how much I learned about swordfighting.

I want to learn how to ride a horse, where can I find lessons?

January 27th, 2011

Hi, I want to learn to ride horses. I am 15 years old. I adore horses, and I do not have any horses myself, but I would like to learn to ride them and I would like to be around them. I have been horseback riding a few times, but I would like to learn how. I just want to learn to ride a horse, not for show, or dressage, or anything like that. Because I do not have a horse myself. I live in Catlettsburg KY, are there any areas around there that have lessons? Thank you.

First, check your phone book for boarding, horse boarding, horse training or contact a local equine vet for voarding facilities in your area. Contact your local boarding facilities, almost every single one will have at least one instructor offering lessons. You can also check your local adsack, penny saver, american classifieds in the livestock section, they may have a few listed there and as always craigslist is a mass of self advertising bussiness people.

Why should you lease a horse? (Parent convincing video)!

January 24th, 2011

Okay, I am also horseless and ‘lease’ less. I made this video to help my parents understand that a horse would help me learn skills other than how to ride. Help them understand what you would learn that would help you in the real world.

*THIS IS NOT GUARANTEED TO WORK. HOWEVER…
… if anything it will show your parents how much you really want a horse, and how you know what your talking about. Here are some tactics to how to convince your parents:
1. Don’t bug them about it! Talk to them but when they tell you to stop talking about it, stop. Try again later, the next day or in a couple of days.
2. Research, and read all about horse leasing and horses. Then impress your parents with your knowledge!
3. Explain that if leasing is too expensive, maybe you could work in a barn in exchange to get to ride their horses.
4. Look around with your parents at barns that are leasing.

Other points…
Make sure you have at least a year of riding experience! You should be able to trot, walk, and canter easily and start to be jumping. This is the best time to lease.
Also, make sure you are committed to the sport! Once you are leasing a horse, it’s hard to just stop and possibly expensive.

GOODLUCK!
