Natural Horsemanship help?

October 29th, 2010

Im beginning natural horsemanship with my BLM mustang, but what should start with? I’ve already done join-up. Would teaching him to lie down be natural horsemanship? I’m teaching leg commands under saddle now. Does anyone know of a natural horsemanship websites? THANKS!

I would suggest trying the Parelli program. I’ve been using it for years and it works great, especially on our BLM mare. Some people don’t like it, but it’s worth it! It is kind of expensive, but you can always look on ebay for the DVDs and equipment. Parelli helps you and your horse’s bond, and helps you to communicate with body language. I would suggest you give it a try. It’s not for everyone, but if your willing to work on it, it’s rewards are great!

My mare, Kandi went from spooky and untrusting to a confadent, happy horse who enjoys being with me =)

There are other programs like Clinton Anderson, but from what I’ve seen, Parelli works the best =D I’ve seen firsthand the things it can do for you and your horse, and I think it’s worth it. My mare and I have NEVER been happier. Feel free to message me if you want more information.

As for thr Parelli’s, no they aren’t perfect, and SOME stuff may be questionable, but I judge for myself what is good for my horse and what isn’t.

Who is your favorite natural horsemanship person?

October 26th, 2010

Title says it all.
Who do you like the best and why?
Like Parelli, Clinton Anderson, Chris Cox, Dennis Reis, ect.

Hi there. I like a little of each.. LOL in order I guess it would be Clinton Anderson, Chris Cox, Parelli, and then Dennis Reis.
I was originally way into Parelli when I began my natural horsemanship adventure. However, I got frustrated because it seemed like it was becoming way commercialized and more into the show of it. I started to feel kind of like they would show you how you could do these great things with horses and use their already trained horses, then it was a matter of do you have the money to buy all the expensive DVD’s to try and learn.. (only my feelings) I had seen Clinton Anderson years ago when he was kind of a no name. I started watching him again on RFD and I was hooked because he was showing you how to actually learn this. He used horses that were not his own ect.. He showed you it all. Yes he has DVD’s to buy but you dont have to if you pick up his shows on TV and go to his tour stops. I have bought a few single ones but that is it. I also like his sense of humor.. LOL Chris Cox is the same way he puts it all out there. Dennis Reis is alright but it seems a lot of just round pen work on tv.. I do not dislike any of them. I do think Pat Parelli is phenomenal as a horseman and enjoy watching him. I got real tired of watching Linda practice on humans LOL. Yes I am a visual person. :o ) They are all great. I just get it better from Anderson
Great question

where can i go horseback trail ride near saskatoon?

October 26th, 2010

Any of the country side, even in the ditches by the road.

There are some hilly areas in the south west area of Saskatoon. Why not go to http://maps.google.ca and type Saskatoon and then under the More, it says Terrain. Check the box and you will be able to zoom in and see where there are hilly areas.

Also, http://www.willowridgestables.com says they have some trails. Might be worth checking out. They`re on the east side of the city, it looks like.

Rex Peterson Using a Neck Rope to Pony a Kid

October 26th, 2010

Teaching kids to ride safely with confidence is one of our specialties. Rex and Cari start the kids out on a neck rope so that they can control the pony from their mount while the kid starts to learn to steer and stop her pony. This is a safe way to start hacking in the country which is where kids learn to ride with balance and confidence. Can you ride a horse that has been trained using natural Horsemanship basically?

October 22nd, 2010

I am looking at buying an 18 year old Arab Gelding that has been ridden for 13 years using natural horsemanship. I am an intermediate rider and do not know a thing about natural horsemanship! Can I still ride him using basic techniques that you would with any other horse? Or will the horse end up confused?
Thanks :)

Thats great =) yes you can ride him using basic techniques.
hes propabaly verry light and i doubt you will need too much pressure.
Talk to his owners and get every little bit of info on his training as not everybody trains them using the same areas of pressure for a certain movement find out all the exercises hes been doing on the ground and in saddle so you can keep it up.
If hes been taken to a bitless bridle witch is possible keep him in one.
its an excellent opportunity for you and you are verry lucky.

and yes as already said get the owners to give you some lessons on the ground and on him.
