Beginner students learn basic horsemanship, safety and grooming and farm chores. Our camps also include fun horsey arts & crafts, fishing and of course lots of riding – including daily horse-back-riding instruction & games on horse-back. Our intermediate students learn more advanced skills in horsemanship & many of the important lessons, skills and responsibilities, that are required to own a horse or pony.

Natural horsemanship gift ideas?

January 28th, 2010

My friend is into Parelli, Monty Roberts and that kind of thing. Her birthday is soon, any gift ideas? Perhaps there are displays on that we could get her tickets for? Our budget is £35. Thanks
Just to add, we’re in the North East England

Here are some dates for Monty Roberts demos in England. They are £25 per ticket.

You could also buy some supplies for her. A nice new rope halter and lead would be nice.

Does horseback riding tear up general use trails?

January 28th, 2010

I have noticed that some of my area mountain bike/hiking trails have been decimated by horseback riding ESPECIALLY on the steep decents and inclines. I can tell they’re horses because of the Holes and Horseshit where it used to be just footprints and bicycle tire tracks. Has anyone else noticed this problem and how can we deal with it?

It seems the people riding horses there are oblivious to trail etiqeutte. Polite riders remove their horses droppings and stick to riding when the surface is in good enough shape to handle horse traffic. All you can really do is file a complaint with whoever is responsible for the trails. A trail around here got closed to horses because of that sort of problem. Good luck.

Natural horsemanship trainer question?

January 21st, 2010

I just got a new horse and I want to train him using natural horsemanship methods. He is still young, only 2 and I want to make sure he is started the right way. I have read one of John Lyons’ books and I have been researching other natural horsemanship trainers online. I found one named Sylvia Scott in Virginia that I really really like. All of her methods just make sense to me and I am eager to begin his training. I was just wondering if anyone has used her training methods before? If so, how do they compare to other natural trainers out there? Any info would be helpful. Below is a link to her website. Thanks!

natural horsemanship is great and you are definately on the right track.

Sylvia Scott is good. I have never used her methods, but I have looked into it. The only reason I didn’t is because I am already using Pat Parelli’s methods. I am so happy with those that I didn’t really see the point in trying anything else. However, it is all similar, but not exactly the same.

Do whatever you feel comfortable with, but personally, I would strongly recommend at least doing level one with the Parelli program. I love the program because it is organized into levels so you can easily track your progress, and the teachings are very very consistant. Level one teaches you the basic basics. Just being safe with your horse and it is so important. You won’t find it a waste of time or money.

Sylvia Scott might be a very good idea though. Pat Parelli teaches you how to teach your horse. If you could personally work with Sylvia, that might be better because you won’t make as many mistakes as you would forging your own path at home with videos. You might also look into having a Parelli instructor help you out if that is more appealing.

Your horse is an ENTIRELY fresh canvas to paint on. You don’t want to screw it up and if you’re just starting natural horsemanship, trust me you will. lol. Working personally with a natural trainer (If you can afford it) would definately be the best way to go if you’re trying to avoid heart-ache.

Good luck!
