Where can I find a free online course or instructions for natural horsemanship?

October 28th, 2009

I need to learn about natural horsemanship and how to do it does anyone know anywhere I can do this for free and online?

Many very good trainers have posted videos on youtube. You will begin to see a reoccurring theme. This reoccurring theme is "horsemanship". Be weary of trainers who give equipment cutsie names instead of calling a tool what it is. This is done as a marketing ploy to sell things at an inflated price. Also be weary of trainers who don’t acknowledge that there is an element of risk to working with horses.

All great trainers have three things in common. They are Honest, HUMBLE and Humane.

Here are just a few to start with:

John Lyons, Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling, Buck Brannaman, Ray Hunt, Tom and Bill Dorrance.

I would like to learn how to better ride a horse. What kind of discipline would be best for me?

October 28th, 2009

I have ridden at camps for three years when I was probably 10-12. I have also had very little training at stables at it was poor quality, all in western. I mostly want to ride for pleasure, but would also like to compete in hunter jumper or barrels. What would be best for someone who would only be able to ride once every one or two weeks, and wants to be able to enjoy riding, but also be able to do a little more?

All instructors, regardless of the discipline, should start out a biginner the same. Most riders start out taking lessons only once a week, so that is fine. You want to find someone to teach you the basics, develop a deep seat and how to move the horse off your legs and teach you how to stay out of your horses’ mouth. If you are interested in hunter jumper find someone who can teach you that. I would say the same about barrels, but in my opion most don’t know how to ride, they just sit on horses that know the barrel patters. If you do find someone that teaches barrel racing run away if they suggest rubber banding you feet into the stirrups, or velcroing your thighs to the saddle. I’m not making this up, I’ve seen it. Neither one is going to teach you proper riding habits, and are dangerous. Besides if you do want to get competitve in barrels, most barrel shows won’t let you use them. I’ve always ridden English, and didn’t know much about western until I meet my husband. When I went to one of his fun shows it had no rubber banding stirrups on the show bill. I had no idea what they were talking about.
As for what discipline to start I would tell you look for a quaility barn and good instruction, before your choosen discipline. You find a good instructer that you get along with, he will make any discipline interesting. You are going to want to find a barn that is close enough for you to get to, and lessons afforadable. IF the closes hunter barn is over an hour away, it will be harder for you to keep your interest up.
When you find a barn you are interseted in taking lessons at, ask to come out and watch them teach a few lessons, it will give you an idea of there teaching style, and if the horses are well trained. At least one of the lessons should be of someone at your same riding level.
